Two to One (2024) by Natja Brunckhorst
SYNOPSIS
Halberstadt, a city in former East Germany, in the summer of 1990. Maren, Robert, and Volker have known and loved each other since childhood. By chance, they discover millions of East German marks (the currency of the German Democratic Republic, or GDR) hidden in an old mine shaft—money that was meant to be destroyed after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The three begin smuggling out backpacks full of this abandoned cash. Together with their friends and neighbors, they create a clever system to trade the now worthless money for goods—outsmarting the incoming West Germans and their capitalist ways. If they play their cards right, this summer could be more than just a wild adventure—it could be the turning point of a lifetime …
Starring Academy Award-nominated actor Sandra Hüller (Zone of Interest, Anatomy of a Fall)
Two To One marks Sandra Hüller’s return to German cinema after her international success, starring alongside a stellar cast. Two to One is a heartwarming comedy about love, friendship, money, and justice. It’s also a tribute to a unique moment in history—just after the fall of the Iron Curtain—when anything seemed possible.
BACKGROUND
Director Natja Brunckhorst based her summer comedy on true events: After the fall of the Berlin Wall and shortly before the German reunification, millions of East German marks were stored in underground bunkers near Halberstadt, a small city in the former GDR. In total, nearly 400 tons of paper money were hidden away during the transition to a unified German currency. It is a fact that some of this money was stolen, though to this day, no one knows how much.
Inspired by this real-life mystery, Brunckhorst crafted a humorous and touching adventure set during a time of upheaval and hope. The film explores themes of money and justice—and above all, what truly matters in life: friendship and family.
